A trial for a La Jolla restaurant owner who is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting eight women has begun. The assaults were mainly done in his restaurant and other places over a nine-year period.

His defense attorney argued there was no evidence for sexual assaults, date rape, or rape drugs forced upon the alleged victims.

Daniel Dorado, who owns the restaurant Voce del Mare, an Italian restaurant located on La Jolla Boulevard in the Bird Rock area, is facing 35 charges, among which rape of an intoxicated person and rape of an unconscious person.

The sixty-one-year-old was meeting his victims at local bars and restaurants, sometimes through dating applications, sometimes for an alleged job interview — his victims’ age range goes from 22 to 58.

Allegedly, he was offering the victims spiked beverages, which would cause them to fall unconscious and later wake up to find Dorado having sex with them or sexually assaulting them.

The prosecutor alleged that once Dorado would have met every victim, he would have a ready drink, in most cases, wine, or a pink cocktail.

His victims were not consuming large amounts of alcohol before they passed out, but they were unable to stand up on their feet or walk.

In March 2018, Dorado was taken into custody on suspicion of assaults on four women. After the custody, the rest of his victims came forward.

The sex crimes allegedly occurred in 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018.
